Gohar Ayub was the second son of former military leader Ayub Khan. He also served in the Pakistan Army but took early retirement. He entered politics in 1974, contested his first National Assembly election from Haripur, and later served as the speaker.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appointed him as the Foreign Minister, and he later held the ministry for water and power. He joined PML-Q with his son Omar Ayub Khan but decided to step down from politics.
His death has drawn condemnation, and President Arif Alvi, caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar Kakar, and political leaders paid tribute to him.
