Gmail Now Offers Automatic Email Summarization Feature

Google has begun rolling out a new Gmail feature powered by Gemini AI that automatically generates email summaries by default, improving how users manage lengthy or complex email threads.

Previously, users needed to manually select the “Summarize this email” option to see a condensed version of a conversation. With the latest update, summaries now appear automatically at the top of emails whenever Gemini AI detects that a summary would be useful—especially in long threads or conversations with multiple replies.

The Gemini AI also provides real-time updates to the summary as new replies arrive, ensuring the overview stays current with the latest messages. This feature is designed to save users time and reduce the effort of scrolling through extensive email exchanges.

At launch, the automatic summary function supports English-language emails only. While not every email will feature an automatic summary, users can still manually trigger the summary by tapping the “Summarize this email” option at the top of the message.

The rollout is expected to take up to 15 days and is initially available to select users, including subscribers of Google Workspace, Google One AI Premium, and customers on Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium plans.
