Giorgio Malan Wins Bronze in Pentathlon; Uncle Senator Says, "A Huge Emotion. I Did Triathlon, but Not at This Level…"

Giorgio Malan has made it to the Olympic podium in modern pentathlon, securing third place at the Château de Versailles. The gold medal went to Egypt’s Ahmed Elgendy, while Japan’s Taishu Sato took home the silver. His uncle, Lucio Malan, the group leader of the Brothers of Italy in the Senate, was present to witness the achievement.

At 24 years old and hailing from Turin, Giorgio is part of the Fiamme Azzurre sports club. He is the youngest son of Fabrizio Malan, Lucio’s brother and a head of plastic surgery in Turin. His mother, Carmen Buongiorno, is a nurse. Sports run in the family; Giorgio has previously won gold in individual pentathlon and bronze in team events at the European Games in Krakow and is dating Alessia Tedeschi.

After 32 years, Giorgio brings home a pentathlon medal; the last one was a team bronze in Barcelona in 1992, while the last individual silver dates back to 1988, when Massullo competed in Seoul. “It’s an incredible emotion to have an Olympic medalist in the family. My daughter presented him with the Tricolor flag,” the senator exclaimed on the competition field.`

“My brother Fabrizio was the Italian triathlon champion in 1974. I also participated in those championships, but I didn’t reach that level. My nephew performed exceptionally well in the laser run, making a strong comeback in the final lap. He excelled in the 200m freestyle, limited the damage in fencing, and was in first place in equestrian.”

How does he feel about his nephew’s politics? “He appreciates it but doesn’t follow it closely; he has five sports to focus on. However, I have reason to believe he voted for me.”
