Gigantic Rare Blue Whale Found Dead on Gwadar Coast

In a tragic event, local fishermen in the coastal region of Gwadar stumbled upon a massive, rare blue whale measuring 27 feet, ensnared in a fishing net. The lifeless creature, discovered on Sunday, bore signs of the net deeply embedded in its body, suggesting a likely cause of death.

Abdur Rahim Baloch, a marine life expert, highlighted the exceptional rarity and immense size of the blue whale, noting it as the largest whale species globally, weighing an estimated seven to eight tons.

Regrettably, the waters off the Gwadar coast have become perilous for sea creatures, resembling a slaughterhouse due to the widespread illegal activities of trawlers. These vessels, equipped with plastic nets and prone to collisions with ships, pose a significant threat to marine life, leading to the routine discovery of deceased sea animals.

Pakistani waters host various whale species, including the blue whale, Bryde’s whale, and Arabian humpback whale. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Pakistan emphasizes the blue whale’s status as the largest and oldest living animal on Earth, capable of exceeding 100 feet in length and weighing up to 200 tons.

Despite a lack of official research on the blue whale population in Pakistan, experts estimate that there are fewer than a hundred of these majestic creatures in the region. Unfortunately, the International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies blue whales as endangered, with only 10,000 to 25,000 remaining globally.

It’s essential to note that these gentle giants, primarily sustaining themselves on krill, pose no threat to humans. This incident recalls a similar event in May 2023 when fishermen in Gwadar’s Jiwani town were astonished to discover a 36-foot deceased blue whale washed ashore on the beach.
