Senator Faisal Vawda Explains Lifetime Role of Field Marshal Gen Asim Munir
Islamabad – Senator Faisal Vawda has stated that the rank of Field Marshal in Pakistan is not merely ceremonial but a lifetime appointment, making General Asim Munir the supreme commander over all armed forces.
Speaking on Samaa TV’s ‘Nadeem Malik Live’, Vawda explained that there is no term limit for a Field Marshal, and from now on, all military appointments, promotions, and tenure extensions will be decided by the Field Marshal. “This rank changes the command structure — all forces will now be under the Field Marshal’s command,” he emphasized.

Reflecting on military history, Vawda said, “No matter how much we criticize former dictator Gen Ayub Khan, we are still carrying forward aspects of that era.” He also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, describing him as a “smart prime minister and capable administrator.”
Regarding the political landscape, Vawda urged the Prime Minister to open channels for dialogue to resolve national issues. He expressed skepticism about the near-term release of PTI founder Imran Khan.
In the same program, Minister of State for Law & Justice Barrister Aqeel confirmed that the proposal to promote the Army Chief to Field Marshal was initiated by the Defence Minister during a cabinet meeting. Aqeel also announced the approval of an extension for the Air Chief’s tenure, noting that the government has fixed tenures for all service chiefs as legislated by parliament.
