The Governor of GB (Gilgit-Baltistan), Syed Mehdi Shah, met with Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan on Wednesday in Gilgit. The two leaders discussed the recent flood situation in GB and reviewed ongoing road restoration projects in the region.
Heavy rainfall and flash floods have caused serious damage to infrastructure, homes, and lives in several districts of GB. Governor Shah said the losses in many areas were severe, both in terms of property and human life. He appreciated the quick response of the Communications Department in addressing the crisis.
During the meeting, progress on key highways was reviewed. These included the Naltar Expressway, Babusar Road, and Ghizer Expressway—routes crucial for transportation and tourism in GB.
Minister Aleem Khan assured the Governor that the National Highway Authority (NHA) is fully active in the region. He said the restoration work is being carried out using heavy machinery and skilled workers. Khan also confirmed that the NHA would remain engaged in GB until full rehabilitation is achieved.
He added that fast recovery was only possible because of the strong coordination between federal and provincial departments. “Our goal is to restore all major roads quickly and safely,” the minister said.
The meeting highlighted the importance of maintaining road links in GB, especially in the face of natural disasters. Officials from both sides agreed that future projects must include better flood preparedness.
Rehabilitation efforts are ongoing across GB, with support from both the federal government and local authorities. Restoration of roads is considered a top priority to help local communities reconnect and recover.
The recent events have underlined the need for long-term infrastructure planning in GB, as climate-related disasters become more frequent.
