Nine Dead, Hundreds of Homes Destroyed in Ongoing GB Floods

GILGIT: At least nine people have died as severe flooding continues to impact Gilgit-Baltistan. The deaths include two women and two children, according to Faizullah Firaq, spokesperson for the GB government.

Search and rescue operations are still underway, with 10 to 12 individuals currently missing. The GB floods have caused widespread destruction across the region. More than 500 houses have been destroyed, along with over 12 kilometers of roads.

The floods have also damaged infrastructure and personal property. Twenty-seven bridges and 22 vehicles were swept away. Several shops and livestock shelters have been destroyed. Floodwaters also carried off thousands of feet of timber.

District Diamer has faced the worst damage, both in human loss and property destruction. More than a dozen people were injured. Over 300 stranded tourists and passengers have been rescued so far, thanks to efforts by emergency teams and the Pakistan Army.

The Pakistan Army is leading rescue and recovery operations. Officials say they are focused on reaching remote areas where people may still be trapped. Relief efforts are ongoing despite difficult weather conditions.

Nationwide, the situation remains serious. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed 13 deaths across Pakistan in the past 24 hours due to ongoing monsoon rains. Punjab saw the highest number of fatalities, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The NDMA has warned of continued heavy rainfall and possible landslides. It urges citizens to stay alert and avoid flood-prone areas as the monsoon season intensifies.

Local authorities in Gilgit-Baltistan are working closely with federal agencies to provide shelter and aid to displaced families. Emergency shelters and food supplies are being arranged for those affected by the GB floods.
