The unrest began when paramilitary Rangers arrested Imran Khan from the Islamabad High Court on May 9, 2023, in connection with a corruption case. The arrest triggered nationwide protests, during which PTI supporters reportedly vandalized military installations, including the General Headquarters (GHQ), and other significant sites.
In response to the violence, authorities initiated a large-scale crackdown on PTI and brought over 100 PTI workers to trial in military courts. Both civil and military authorities have accused Khan of orchestrating the May 9 events, a claim he and his party deny. Khan has stated that while he had called for peaceful protests outside the GHQ in the event of his arrest, he did not condone the vandalism of state properties.
