Flour Prices Surge By 100% In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Flour prices in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have surged sharply over the past two months, rising from Rs. 75 per kilogram to Rs. 145 per kilogram. This dramatic increase comes after the suspension of wheat and flour supplies from Punjab, causing major disruptions in local markets.

Market reports indicate that a 20-kilogram bag of flour now costs Rs. 1,250 more than it did eight weeks ago. The spike in flour prices has also affected daily food items, with 150-gram rotis now selling for Rs. 30 in local tandoors across KP.

The shortage has been attributed to Punjab’s decision to restrict inter-provincial transport of wheat and flour. This restriction has disrupted supply chains and created severe inflationary pressure, affecting both consumers and local flour mills.

In response, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has formally written to the Punjab Food Department, urging the immediate lifting of the transport ban. The letter, issued after a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, warned that the restrictions are severely impacting residents who rely on Punjab for most of their wheat and flour supply.

Officials highlighted that local markets are now facing an acute shortage of flour, forcing consumers to buy at nearly double the previous price. Flour mills are also struggling to maintain production due to the limited availability of raw materials.

The provincial government included a comparative analysis of wheat and flour prices before and after the supply restrictions to demonstrate the impact on KP. Citing Article 155(1) of the Constitution, the government emphasized that provinces must cooperate to ensure the free movement of essential goods, including wheat and flour.

The KP government has called on Punjab to lift the restrictions promptly to stabilize flour prices, protect consumers, and support local industry. Officials hope the measure will reduce inflation and restore the supply of essential food items across the province.
