Qatar Announces Five-Day Public Holiday for Eid Al Adha

DOHA – May 23, 2025: Qatar has declared a five-day public holiday for Eid Al Adha, set to begin from the 9th to the 13th of Dhul Hijjah, in accordance with Islamic tradition, the government announced on Thursday.

The exact Gregorian dates of the holiday will be officially confirmed following the moon-sighting committee meeting scheduled for May 27.

According to Khaleej Times, if the crescent moon is sighted on the evening of May 27, Dhul Hijjah — the final month of the Islamic calendar — will begin on May 28. If not, it will commence on May 29.

This places Arafah Day, the holiest day in the Islamic calendar, on either Thursday, June 5, or Friday, June 6. Eid Al Adha will be observed the day after.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will also observe Arafah Day as a public holiday, followed by a three-day Eid break from June 6 to June 8, pending official confirmation based on the moon sighting.

Significance of Eid Al Adha

Eid Al Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command — a central act of devotion in Islamic belief. The holiday is marked by prayers, charity, and the ritual sacrifice of animals, with meat distributed among family, friends, and the less fortunate.

Eid Al Adha is considered one of the most important religious events for Muslims worldwide, and is also the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah.
