FIFA Unveils First-Ever Intercontinental Cup: Real Madrid Awaits Final Opponent

The competition begins on September 22 with a playoff match between AFC Champions League winners Al Ain and OFC Champions League winners Auckland City, known as the African-Asian-Pacific Cup. The winner will face CAF Champions League winners Al Ahly in Cairo on October 29.

The first two matches will take place at the home stadiums of the higher-ranked teams, offering local fans the chance to see their clubs in action. After these initial games, the tournament moves to Doha, Qatar.

On December 11, the 2024 CONMEBOL Libertadores champions will face Mexican side Pachuca, the CONCACAF Champions Cup winners, in what FIFA has termed the “Derby of the Americas.” The winners of these matches will then compete in the Challenger Cup on December 14.

The victor of the Challenger Cup will advance to the Intercontinental Cup Final on December 18, where they will face Real Madrid. This match falls on Qatar’s National Day and commemorates the two-year anniversary of Argentina’s win over France in the 2022 World Cup final.
