FBR Seizes 3,000 Illegal Tobacco Bales in Abbottabad

The Federal Board of Revenue carried out a major operation in Abbottabad, where enforcement teams seized 3,000 illegal tobacco bales from multiple concealed warehouses. Officials stated the raid followed detailed intelligence reports indicating large-scale tax evasion and undisclosed movement of tobacco in the region, threatening substantial revenue losses to the national exchequer.

During the crackdown, authorities discovered that the bales were being stored without any official documentation, suggesting they were intended for processing and distribution outside the legal tax framework. Enforcement teams acted quickly to prevent the illegal stock from being shifted, sealing several storage units and securing the area to ensure no material was removed during the operation.

Officials reported that some traders and suppliers associated with the illegal stockpile attempted to escape when the raid began. Law enforcement personnel immediately controlled the situation, detaining several suspects for questioning and examining the supply network responsible for the undocumented tobacco distribution. Investigators are now verifying links between the seized bales and larger smuggling or tax-evasion networks active in the province.

The FBR highlighted that the illegal tobacco trade has long remained a challenge due to powerful networks that attempt to bypass regulatory systems. According to officials, such illegal activity leads to billions in losses every year, as traders avoid duties and excise taxes. The department has therefore intensified monitoring and enforcement actions to dismantle these operations and bring offenders under strict legal scrutiny.

Authorities also warned that this operation is only the beginning, as similar raids will be conducted in other districts where illegal tobacco movement is suspected. The department aims to ensure transparent trade practices and protect legitimate businesses that follow the tax rules, reinforcing the government’s stance on eliminating financial irregularities within the sector.

The FBR urged all traders, warehouse owners, and transporters to maintain complete documentation and adhere to tax requirements. Officials said that strict action—including sealing of warehouses, arrests, and heavy penalties—will be taken against anyone involved in stockpiling, smuggling, or transporting tobacco without proper registration or tax compliance.
