Rs. 250M Cigarette Heist FBR Officials Ordered to Appear

A subcommittee of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control has summoned FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial and other tax officers. The move comes after smuggled cigarettes worth Rs. 250 million were stolen from a customs warehouse.

Officials from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) told the committee that notices had been issued to the warehouse owner, involved tax officers, and the FBR chairman. All were required to submit their responses regarding the theft.

Senator Talha Mahmood directed that any FBR official failing to appear by April 2 should be immediately arrested. He added that officials, including the chairman, must be brought before the committee in handcuffs if necessary. Lawmakers criticized the habit of high-ranking officers avoiding committee meetings, calling it unacceptable.

The committee also highlighted suspicious activity, revealing that the Deputy Commissioner of Inland Revenue purchased a house shortly after the cigarette theft. Authorities ordered that all evidence linked to the tobacco company, including vehicles used in the crime, be properly documented. The company owner was warned to appear before the committee by April 2, or face arrest.

FIA Deputy Director Afzal Niazi confirmed that substantial evidence has been collected, including documentation of vehicles and other resources used in the smuggling operation. The committee emphasized that strict action will be taken against anyone obstructing the investigation.

This development underscores the government’s focus on accountability and zero tolerance for smuggling and corruption. The FBR and related authorities are under close scrutiny, with the committee committed to ensuring that all responsible parties are held accountable.
