FBR Halts PIA Accounts During EU Inspection

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]In a recent setback, Pakistan International Airlines’ accounts were once again frozen by the Federal Board of Revenue on Wednesday. This development coincides with the visit of a European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) team set to inspect the airline and assess its potential resumption of flights to Europe and other destinations. Alongside the account freeze, the airline faced another challenge as Pakistan State Oil threatened to cut off oil supply if outstanding dues were not settled by Thursday.

Expressing disappointment, a PIA spokesperson stated that it was unfortunate for the FBR to freeze accounts while an EASA delegation was examining the airline. Despite the freeze affecting 28 PIA accounts, the spokesperson mentioned ongoing communication with the FBR, expressing hope for a swift resolution.

It’s noteworthy that PIA’s flight operations to the UK and other European destinations ceased in 2020 following a plane crash in Karachi on May 22, 2020. EASA restrictions ensued after concerns raised by the then aviation minister, Ghulam Sarwar Khan, regarding the qualifications of many PIA pilots. Subsequent investigations disproved the allegations, causing significant financial losses and damaging the airline’s reputation.

As PIA faces various challenges, a four-member EASA delegation inspected the carrier’s operations, apron, engineering area, and flight safety tools in Karachi. The federal government has also opted to privatize the financially struggling Pakistan International Airlines, hiring a consultant for the process. Privatization Minister Fawad Hassan Fawad supports this move, considering the numerous challenges confronting the national carrier.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
