The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has started a crackdown on wealthy individuals who display their luxury lifestyles on social media.
Officials said that data of nearly 100,000 people has been collected. These individuals are seen flaunting expensive houses, luxury cars, jewellery, and lavish weddings online. The FBR warned that those who fail to update their tax returns will face legal consequences.
A special social media monitoring team has been assigned to this task. The team is closely observing posts that show luxury spending and assets. Big bungalows, high-end vehicles, branded jewellery, and costly wedding events are among the items being tracked.
According to officials, some people were seen wearing suits worth $20,000 at wedding ceremonies. Such displays of wealth must match the income declared in tax filings. Any mismatch will lead to further questioning.
The FBR plans to compare the tax returns of last year with those submitted this year. Nearly 80% of returns are expected to be audited during this process. Those hiding assets or income will be asked to explain their financial sources.
The crackdown also targets extravagant wedding celebrations. People spending large sums on jewellery, clothing, and events will have to show proof of income. The FBR stressed that these expenses must be reflected in updated tax filings.
However, the authority clarified that no action will be taken against individuals who provide accurate and updated details. Citizens were urged to update their returns on time to avoid complications.
The FBR stated that its aim is not to target ordinary taxpayers but to ensure fairness. Those living far beyond their declared means must justify their wealth or face strict legal action.
