Father Confesses to Killing Daughter Over Disapproval of TikTok Content

A tragic incident unfolded in Quetta, Balochistan, when a man confessed to shooting his teenage daughter, citing his disapproval of her TikTok content. Anwar ul-Haq, who had recently moved his family back to Pakistan from the United States, initially told authorities that his daughter’s death was the result of an attack by unidentified gunmen. However, after further investigation, he admitted to the crime, police confirmed.

The suspect’s actions were reportedly motivated by objections to his daughter’s dressing, social activities, and lifestyle, particularly her TikTok posts, which she had begun while living in the US and continued after their return to Pakistan. Senior investigator Zohaib Mohsin hinted at the possibility of an honour killing, a practice that has sparked ongoing debates in Pakistan, where more than 1,000 women are killed annually by family members over perceived violations of social norms.

Anwar ul-Haq, a US citizen, faces formal murder charges, while his brother-in-law has also been arrested in connection with the incident. Authorities are examining all angles of the case, including analyzing the victim’s locked phone. This tragedy comes amidst ongoing concerns about the impact of social media in Pakistan, where over 54 million people use TikTok, and the platform has faced multiple bans due to content deemed inappropriate by the government.

The case has highlighted the growing tension between conservative values and the increasing presence of social media in Pakistani society, with families often at the center of these cultural clashes. Investigations are ongoing, and the victim’s family has yet to make a public statement.
