The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to fully redesign the Faizabad Interchange. This decision comes after canceling plans to only widen its loops. The goal is to provide a long-term solution to the persistent traffic problems at the interchange.
The Faizabad Interchange, built in the 1990s, is a crucial entry point to Islamabad. It often faces heavy congestion and is a common site for protests. Initially, the CDA planned a Rs200 million project to widen the interchange loops to ease traffic flow.
However, after reviewing the bids, the CDA chose not to proceed with the loop widening. Officials agreed this would only be a temporary fix. Syed Nafasat Raza, CDA Member Engineering, stated that the chairman directed a full redesign to solve the problem for the next 30 years.
Three consulting firms have been hired to create a master plan for the interchange. The plan will be presented to the interior minister once it is complete. Construction will happen in phases based on the approved design and budget.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi previously urged the CDA to address the daily traffic jams at the interchange, especially the loop linking Murree Road to Islamabad Expressway. The new redesign aims to improve traffic flow and commuter safety.
The comprehensive plan for the Faizabad Interchange reflects the CDA’s commitment to finding a permanent solution. This will help reduce congestion and improve travel times in the capital city.
