Ex-Diplomat Warns of Possible Indian Strike Amid Rising Tensions

Former Pakistani High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, has cautioned that New Delhi may be planning a military strike against Pakistan in the wake of the recent Pahalgam attack that left 26 people dead. Basit drew parallels with India’s past retaliations following the 2016 Uri and 2019 Pulwama attacks.

Basit pointed to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aggressive rhetoric during a speech in Bihar, suggesting it hinted at a possible cross-border operation. He warned such action could come “within days or a fortnight” and might target alleged terror camps across the Line of Control.

Commenting on India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, Basit labelled the move as “symbolic,” arguing that India lacks the necessary infrastructure to block water flow from western rivers. He reaffirmed that the treaty, brokered by the World Bank, cannot be altered unilaterally.

He called on Pakistan to mount a strong diplomatic and legal campaign, urging engagement with the World Bank. While downplaying any immediate threat to Pakistan’s water supply, Basit warned that more terror incidents in Balochistan and other regions could follow.
