Sir Elton John has been named Time magazine’s 2024 Icon of the Year, an honor recognizing his immense influence on music, philanthropy, and pop culture. In an intimate interview for the cover story, the legendary musician reflected on his remarkable career, lasting relevance, and the causes that are important to him.
“If people remember that we tried to change the world a little bit, we were kind, we tried to help people… And then, apart from that, there was the music,” John shared.
Time highlighted John’s enduring legacy, pointing to his 57 U.S. Top 40 hits and his evolution from a flamboyant performer to a Broadway composer, Disney songwriter, and collaborator with emerging artists. Writer Belinda Luscombe praised his ability to connect with new generations, calling it his “fourth act,” in which he continues to show remarkable creativity.

Among those celebrating his impact was Dua Lipa, with whom John collaborated on the hit “Cold Heart.” “It was because of our friendship,” Lipa said. “Singing alongside one of my musical heroes was a no-brainer.” Rising star Chappell Roan also shared the valuable advice John gave her: “The songs will come. He thought he wouldn’t have the ideas, but they were absolutely there. He just had to let them come to him.”
John also discussed some of his career challenges, such as his Broadway musical Tammy Faye closing after a brief run and his unease with music videos. “Music videos should be made by good-looking people like Harry Styles,” he joked.
Despite facing setbacks, John remains steadfast in his mission to inspire, mentor, and leave a lasting legacy of kindness and creativity. Time described his influence: “The candle that is Elton John has been inextinguishable, no matter how strong the wind.”
