Tech mogul Elon Musk has launched XChat, a new end-to-end encrypted messaging and calling platform embedded within social media giant X, formerly known as Twitter. The rollout, which began Sunday in beta for select paid subscribers, marks a significant stride in Musk’s broader push to transform X into an all-in-one “everything app.”
In a post shared on X, Musk emphasized the platform’s privacy-first approach, highlighting features like vanishing messages, encrypted chats, and anonymous audio/video calls — all functioning without the need for a phone number. Built on what Musk called a “whole new architecture,” XChat is said to draw inspiration from Bitcoin-style cryptography, though technical specifics remain undisclosed.

XChat positions X in direct competition with established encrypted messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram. Musk’s bold strategy — removing the phone number requirement and integrating encrypted chat into a wider social media ecosystem — may appeal to privacy-conscious users seeking more control over their digital communications.
The launch comes amid rising global demand for secure, anonymous messaging. Beta testers have noted that XChat includes an optional 4-digit passcode system, further enhancing security and user control.
As part of Musk’s vision to evolve X into a multifunctional app with integrated services like payments, AI tools, and possibly even dating, XChat could become a foundational pillar. Whether it can displace more entrenched messaging giants remains uncertain, but the move clearly signals Musk’s ambition to redefine digital interaction.
