Elon Musk has made bold predictions about the future of human colonization on Mars following SpaceX’s recent success in capturing a massive booster from its Starship rocket. Musk estimates that building a self-sustaining city on Mars, capable of housing one million people, could be achievable if civilization remains stable for the next thirty years.

However, Musk also acknowledged the enormous challenges involved in such an undertaking. He estimated that to make the city self-sustaining, at least a million tons of equipment would need to be transported to Mars. This effort could require more than $1,000 trillion, an astronomical figure when compared to the US GDP, which currently stands at around $29 trillion. This cost highlights the complexity and scale of the task, making it seem financially impossible with today’s resources.
Despite these hurdles, Musk remains optimistic. He believes that with ongoing technological advancements, SpaceX can make interplanetary travel affordable, potentially laying the groundwork for human life on Mars. His vision, though ambitious, continues to push the boundaries of space exploration.
