Elon Musk has officially announced the formation of a new political party, deepening his rift with former ally Donald Trump. The tech billionaire introduced the “America Party” on his platform, X, saying it aims to restore freedom to U.S. citizens.
The move came shortly after Musk criticized Trump’s latest tax and spending bill, calling it a major threat to the U.S. economy. Musk claimed that the bill could push the national deficit to $2.5 trillion, making it unsustainable.

On Independence Day, Elon Musk polled his followers, asking if a new political party should be formed. After receiving strong support, he declared, “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Musk, known for his leadership at Tesla and SpaceX, previously supported Trump financially and was involved in efforts to cut government spending. However, their relationship deteriorated following disagreements over economic policy.
Trump has reportedly threatened to withdraw federal subsidies from Musk’s companies in response to the fallout. Despite this, Musk appears determined to challenge the current political system.
Republican leaders worry that Musk’s new party may split conservative votes ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Some believe it could weaken the Republican majority in Congress.
