Election discussion

Election discussion (1)

Following the PML-Q and PTI’s improbable coup in the Punjab Assembly, a result that appeared unlikely just a few days prior has begun to become more likely. Speculation about whether we might once more be moving toward an early general election is once more rife around the country. The PML-N keeps putting on a brave front and claims that it is “ready” to run in by-elections in both Punjab and KP.

Its options, however, are not as simple as they would appear. The rationale and practicality of conducting early elections for all but one-third of the seats typically up for grabs in a general election is one element. Second, if there are only two provinces where elections are held, the PTI may benefit even more if it wins stronger majorities in both assemblies as a result of the by-elections. When elections for the remaining legislatures are held, the PTI will be in a stronger position to level the playing field against the PDM.

The PDM’s options are not fantastic, but surrender is understandably also not an option. If a compromise cannot be reached, this can only lead to increased political instability in the months to come. Imran Khan, the former prime minister, should think about declaring his innings and moderating his aggressive approach now that he has gained a strategic advantage. This is the chance for him to show that he truly believes he is qualified and prepared to lead Pakistan for another term.

In this regard, it is good to see PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry’s suggestion to the federal government to come to a consensus on the electoral framework by convening a meeting together. It would seem that Mr. Khan has approved the invitation because it was sent from his home. Before calling polls, the PML-N is seeking something akin. The party wanted “the terms of the game to be determined before the elections; otherwise, nobody would recognize the results of the polls,” Talal Chaudhry, one of its leaders, said in an interview with a Middle Eastern outlet on Friday.
