KARACHI – The murder case of senior lawyer Khawaja Shamsul Islam has seen a major development. An Anti-Terrorism Administrative Court in Karachi has declared eight suspects as absconders after reviewing the police investigation report.
According to the report, the attack took place after Khawaja Shamsul Islam attended a funeral prayer with his son at Khayaban-e-Rahat. He was shot near the mosque steps as the prayer ended. The case was filed on the complaint of his brother, Khawaja Faisal.
Police identified Imran Afridi as the prime suspect. They said Afridi fired two bullets, one hitting Khawaja Shamsul Islam and the other injuring his son, Daniyalul Islam. Afridi then escaped in the confusion.
The absconders named in the report include Imran Afridi, Zarar Afridi, Inam Khan, Usman, Taqdeer, Bahar Gul, Khasta Gul, and Shehryar. The FIR lists charges of murder, attempted murder, and terrorism. Authorities confirmed that all eight suspects are still at large.
Earlier, Imran Afridi admitted to the killing in a video statement. He claimed that Khawaja Shamsul Islam was responsible for the death of his father, a police constable. Afridi alleged that his father was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered over a financial dispute worth Rs 3.5 million.
He stated that he and Khawaja Shamsul Islam were once friends but had a falling out due to money matters. Afridi said he lost faith in the justice system and decided to take revenge himself.
The suspect insisted he acted alone and asked that his relatives not be targeted, saying they had no role in the crime. Police continue efforts to locate and arrest the eight absconders as the investigation moves forward.
