As Eidul Azha approaches, temporary fodder stalls have sprung up across Rawalpindi to meet the rising demand for animal feed. From roadside setups to market corners, vendors are supplying fresh green fodder, dry fodder, and oilseed cake (khal) to cater to sacrificial animals.

With many residents keeping livestock at home, the convenience of nearby stalls has been welcomed. “Having fodder available locally is a blessing. Traveling to distant markets is difficult,” said Muhammad Ahsan, a resident of Chaklala Scheme-III, who mixes green fodder with husk and oilseed cake for his animals.

However, some buyers complain about inflated prices and poor-quality feed. *”During Eid, fodder costs Rs1,000-1,200 daily, whereas normally, the same amount lasts two weeks,”* noted Shahmir Hussain from Arya Mohallah. He urged authorities to monitor prices and prevent vendors from mixing spoiled grains with fresh fodder.

Vendors argue that rising transport and labor costs justify the rates. Haji Munir, a stall owner at Bagh Sardaran, sources green fodder from villages like Rewat and Fateh Jang. “We provide doorstep convenience—otherwise, people would have to travel far,” he said.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Faisal, a vendor near Lahore High Court Road, highlighted the challenges of the seasonal trade. “Storing and protecting green fodder from heat and rain is hard work,” he said. Currently, machine-cut fodder sells at Rs50/kg, oilseed cake at Rs150/kg, and chickpea husk at Rs200/kg.
