Drone Strikes And Missile Attacks Escalate Ahead Of Russian Ceasefire

Moscow’s airports were forced to shut overnight for the second consecutive night as waves of Ukrainian drone attacks targeted the Russian capital, while a separate Russian missile strike killed at least one civilian in Ukraine’s Odesa. Russia’s aviation authority confirmed that all four of Moscow’s major airports were briefly closed but have since resumed operations.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that air defence systems intercepted 19 drones approaching the city. Across the country, Russian military officials claimed to have shot down 105 Ukrainian drones overnight, with additional attempted strikes reported in Penza and Voronezh regions. Ukraine has not publicly commented on these attacks.

Meanwhile, in southern Ukraine, a Russian missile struck residential areas in Odesa, killing one person and sparking multiple fires. Kharkiv faced a two-hour drone assault, wounding several civilians, while Dnipropetrovsk also suffered injuries from overnight strikes. Ukraine’s military claimed responsibility for a precision airstrike on a Russian drone command post near Tetkino in Russia’s Kursk region, reportedly killing up to 20 personnel.

Despite an upcoming temporary ceasefire announced by Moscow for Victory Day commemorations from May 8 to 11, both sides continue to exchange heavy cross-border strikes, casting doubt over the prospects of even a brief pause in hostilities.
