The anti-graft court upheld the ex-premier’s eight-day physical remand granted to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Imran’s legal team will have access to the party chief, according to the detailed order issued by accountability court judge Muhammad Bashir.

The judge also allowed Imran’s wife, Bushra Bibi, to speak with him over the phone.

Imran is scheduled to appear in court on May 17.

Hearing and verdict

The court had announced its verdict and granted NAB an eight-day physical remand of Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust case the day before.

The hearing was held at the Islamabad Police Lines, which were designated as a court venue as a “one-time dispensation” under tight security. Judge Muhammad Bashir presided over the case, during which the NAB presented the reasons for the former prime minister’s arrest and sought his 14-day physical remand.

However, Imran’s legal team objected to the NAB’s request. His lawyer, Khawaja Harris, insisted that the PTI chief would cooperate with the investigation and that “no physical remand was required.”

During the hearing, the NAB prosecutor informed the accountability court that Imran Khan was shown the arrest warrant at the time of his arrest.

The PTI chief, on the other hand, insisted that he was shown the warrant when he arrived at the NAB office.

The NAB prosecutor told the court during his arguments that “this is a case of corruption that was investigated by the National Crime Agency (NAC) of the United Kingdom.”

“The money in this case was supposed to be transferred to the government of Pakistan,” he added.

Harris contended that his “client was illegally arrested.”

“The proper method of arresting Imran was not used.” NAB issued a notice, but when did the complaint become a reference?” He inquired.

“Imran is also being dragged in many other cases,” the lawyer said, adding that “my client will join the investigation and cooperate in it.” The verdict was later reserved by the court.

During the hearing, PTI chairman Imran Khan told the accountability court that he was afraid for his life.

“I haven’t used the loo in 24 hours,” the former prime minister admitted during the Al-Qadir Trust trial.
