Donald Trump has commended Pakistan’s leadership for playing a key role in facilitating the recent US-Iran negotiations held in Islamabad.
Speaking in Washington, Trump credited both Asim Munir and Shehbaz Sharif for their effective leadership, stating that their efforts were instrumental in bringing both sides to the negotiating table. He described Pakistan’s role as crucial in enabling dialogue during a highly sensitive period.
Trump praised the country’s leadership as “exceptional” and noted that they had expressed gratitude to him for helping avert a potential large-scale conflict with India, which he claimed could have resulted in significant loss of life.
He further revealed that the negotiations began early in the day and continued for nearly 20 hours, during which both sides made progress on several issues. However, he acknowledged that a final agreement could not be reached.
According to Trump, the main sticking point remains Iran’s nuclear programme. He stated that Tehran is unwilling to give up its nuclear ambitions, which continues to hinder progress in the talks. He also emphasized that allowing an unpredictable country to possess nuclear capabilities is unacceptable from the US perspective.
Despite the lack of a final deal, Trump suggested that the discussions marked an important step forward, highlighting the role of diplomacy and mediation efforts led by Pakistan.
