A devastating roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, has left at least 79 people dead and 155 others injured. The tragedy occurred during a high-profile concert and triggered a massive emergency response as rescuers raced against time to pull survivors from the rubble.
Among the deceased were several public figures, including renowned merengue singer Rubby Perez, Monte Cristi provincial governor Nelsy Cruz, and former Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel. Authorities also confirmed the death of another former MLB player, Tony Blanco. The club was packed with politicians, celebrities, and sports icons at the time of the incident.

Pedro Martinez, a Hall of Fame MLB pitcher, revealed in an emotional Instagram video that members of his family were still unaccounted for under the debris. “We don’t know what happened to them,” he said, reflecting the anguish of dozens of families gathered at the scene for news of their loved ones.
President Luis Abinader confirmed the involvement of national emergency teams and increased deployment of heavy machinery to accelerate the debris removal and search operations. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, and psychological support is being provided to the victims’ families.
