This weekend sees the return of the “Merc with a Mouth” as *Deadpool & Wolverine* hits theaters, with projections indicating domestic box office sales between $160 million and $180 million during its debut.

The third stand-alone film starring Ryan Reynolds is anticipated to lead in R-rated openings for 2024 and break the record for the biggest debut ever for an R-rated film. As the 34th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it currently holds the title of top preseller of the year, surpassing records previously set by Disney and Pixar’s *Inside Out 2* and the original *Deadpool*.

Mike Bowers, president and CEO of Harkins Theatres, predicts it will set a new benchmark for R-rated movies. “I think no question this is going to open as the largest R-rated movie of all time,” he stated.

Ellis Jacob, president and CEO of Cineplex, agrees, noting that the film’s abundance of Easter eggs is likely to drive repeat viewings. The film’s secrecy and limited press screenings have heightened fan anticipation, boosting demand for premium screenings such as IMAX and Dolby.

Marvel’s partnership with theaters includes exclusive merchandise like collectible popcorn buckets and drink containers, expected to enhance concession sales.

This release is critical for Marvel as Disney adjusts its strategy following a series of underwhelming theatrical performances and a crowded streaming market. Shawn Robbins, founder of Box Office Theory, emphasizes the film’s appeal, noting that it combines beloved characters with high anticipation, offering a fresh take on the MCU’s first R-rated entry.
