CM Maryam Stresses Safety to Avoid Basant Tr@gedies

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has taken notice of a recent incident in Rawalpindi where a young girl was injured after being struck by a kite string. Expressing concern over the matter, the chief minister directed the Rawalpindi commissioner to submit a detailed report about the incident and the circumstances surrounding it.

Maryam Nawaz emphasized that Basant celebrations will be permitted only in Lahore, while kite flying will remain strictly prohibited in the rest of Punjab. She stressed that the festival, which is meant to bring happiness and joy, must not result in accidents or loss of life due to the use of unsafe or banned kite strings.

The chief minister instructed authorities to strictly enforce the ban on hazardous kite strings and take firm action against those involved in their production, sale, or use. She underlined that public safety must be the top priority and that no negligence would be tolerated.

Earlier this year, Maryam Nawaz had also ordered continued combing operations in sensitive areas to maintain peace and security across the province. These directions were issued during a high-level meeting where officials provided briefings on law and order, digital surveillance, and community-based reforms.

During the meeting, new legislation was approved to ensure strict punishment for anyone damaging Safe City cameras or other government installations. She also directed departments to strengthen digital monitoring of individuals listed in the Fourth Schedule and to continue operations against foreigners residing illegally, including undocumented Afghan nationals.

In addition to security measures, the chief minister announced a welfare step by approving the “Punjab Chief Minister’s Honorarium Card for Imams,” with February set as the deadline for distribution.

Through these initiatives, the government aims to ensure safety, order, and public welfare across Punjab.
