Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced that the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SART) system will soon be introduced in Faisalabad and Gujranwala, following a successful test run in Lahore.

On Tuesday, the chief minister personally took an experimental ride on the electric SART tram, inspecting its features and observing its performance during a test drive from Raiwind Road to Muslim Town.

During the visit, Transport Minister Bilal Akbar briefed her on the system’s cutting-edge technology and passenger-friendly design.

The test was conducted amid regular traffic, drawing attention from curious bystanders. The launch in Lahore marks Pakistan’s first electric, trackless tram initiative.

Developed by Norinco International, the SART system features fully air-conditioned coaches and can accommodate up to 320 passengers in three compartments, with the option to add a fourth. It can travel up to 40 kilometers on a single charge.

Already in use in countries such as Turkey, China, and the UAE, SART is expected to ease traffic congestion and contribute to environmental sustainability.

Addressing the event, Maryam Nawaz stated that the initiative would enhance urban mobility in Lahore and confirmed that similar advanced transit systems will soon benefit residents of Faisalabad and Gujranwala.
