Maltese chocolatier Andrew Farrugia has set a new World Record by creating the world’s longest chocolate sculpture. The record-breaking achievement was unveiled ahead of this year’s Winter Olympic Games in Milan.
Farrugia, who already holds several Guinness World Records, collaborated with students from the Institute of Tourism Studies to build a 55.27-metre-long chocolate train. The sculpture features a vintage steam locomotive and 22 chocolate carriages, each weighing approximately 160 kilograms (352 pounds).
The ambitious project required months of preparation. Planning began nearly a year before the unveiling, while practical work started in October of last year. Farrugia first crafted clay models of every section of the train before producing the chocolate components.
Around 5,000 individual chocolate pieces were cut and carved in Bergamo. These pieces were carefully wrapped in plastic and transported to Milan. The team then spent several days assembling the sculpture, ensuring all parts fit perfectly for the official presentation.
Speaking to Guinness World Records, Farrugia explained that the project included about 5,000 separate components, including roughly 180 wheels made specifically for the train carriages. The chocolatier said the record was designed to leave a lasting legacy for his institution, his country, and his family.
The project highlights the remarkable combination of skill, patience, and teamwork required to achieve a World Record. Farrugia’s chocolate train not only demonstrates technical mastery but also engages students in a unique, creative process.
The 55.27-metre-long chocolate train now officially holds the title of the world’s longest chocolate sculpture. The achievement adds another milestone to Farrugia’s career and showcases the potential of chocolate artistry as both a craft and a form of large-scale creative expression.
