Chinese AI Model Claims To Outperform GPT-5 And Is Completely Free

The global AI race is heating up with the launch of Kimi K2 Thinking, a new AI model developed by Beijing-based Moonshot AI Lab. The company claims that this AI model outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-5 and Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4.5 on several benchmarks.

Kimi K2 Thinking is completely free and open-source. Moonshot AI Lab describes it as a reasoning-focused Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) AI model. It combines long-term planning, adaptive reasoning, and online tools such as integrated browsers, enabling it to tackle complex academic and analytical tasks.

On tests like Humanity’s Last Exam, BrowseComp, and Seal-0, the AI model reportedly exceeded GPT-5 and Claude Sonnet 4.5 in reasoning, planning, and web browsing tasks. Its coding abilities were on par with competitors but did not significantly surpass them.

The architecture of the AI model allows it to break down ambiguous problems into actionable steps. It can adapt across hundreds of reasoning stages, which helps in solving complex and multi-layered tasks more efficiently.

Kimi K2 was trained on roughly 1 trillion parameters, making it a highly advanced AI model. It is openly available on Hugging Face, a platform similar to GitHub for large language models. This ensures global accessibility for developers, researchers, and AI enthusiasts without any cost.
