China’s Defence Minister Dong Jun has urged the world to strengthen unity and avoid divisions. Speaking at the Beijing Xiangshan Forum on security, he warned against a system shaped by the “rule of the jungle.”
Dong said global peace was at risk due to Cold War thinking, hegemony, and rising protectionism. He cautioned that foreign military interference and forcing nations to pick sides would push the international community into chaos. According to him, the world is now at another “crossroads,” where dialogue must be chosen over confrontation.
The minister’s comments carried indirect criticism of the United States. His remarks were sharper compared to his speech at last year’s forum. He stressed that pursuing absolute military superiority and adopting a “might is right” approach would only divide the world and increase disorder.
Dong also highlighted that a strong Chinese military would serve as a stabilizing force. He linked his message to President Xi Jinping’s earlier calls against hegemonism and power politics. Recently, China held a large military parade in Beijing, showcasing new weapons and signaling its growing defense strength.
Tensions between China and the US remain high, particularly over Taiwan and the South China Sea. Dong repeated that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China and said the People’s Liberation Army would firmly oppose any separatist attempts. He added that external interference would be thwarted at all times.
Taiwan, however, rejects China’s sovereignty claims. President Lai Ching-te insists that only the island’s people have the right to decide their future.
This year’s Xiangshan Forum has drawn about 1,800 participants from 100 countries, including military officials, diplomats, and scholars. While many Western nations sent lower-level delegations, they remain interested in China’s military policies and ongoing build-up.
