China To Supply High-Speed Train Units To Pakistan Rail Network

Pakistan will import high-speed train units from China for a new service connecting Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Operations are scheduled to start on March 23, 2026.

The project is a joint effort by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Ministry of Railways. The newly introduced diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains are expected to reduce travel time between the twin cities to just 20 minutes. The CDA will manage train operations, while Pakistan Railways will maintain track infrastructure.

The high-speed service will run between Saddar Railway Station in Rawalpindi and Margalla Railway Station in Islamabad. Officials have proposed a one-way fare of Rs. 50 to ensure affordability for daily commuters.

Authorities plan to extend Margalla Station to connect with the Ninth Avenue Metro Station. This integration will allow commuters easy access to key locations, including the Pak Secretariat, Islamabad International Airport, and Srinagar Highway. Experts say the service will benefit office workers, students, and general passengers traveling between the two cities.

Currently, direct train travel between Islamabad and Rawalpindi is limited to long-distance routes, such as the Islamabad Express, which also stops at both Margalla and Rawalpindi stations. The dedicated high-speed service is expected to significantly improve urban mobility in the capital region.

Officials emphasize that this collaboration with China reflects ongoing efforts to modernize Pakistan’s transportation sector. The advanced train units are designed to provide safe, reliable, and efficient travel for passengers.

This initiative demonstrates strong bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and China in infrastructure development. Authorities hope the project will encourage more people to use public transport, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance overall connectivity in the twin cities.
