China has accelerated construction work on the Mohmand Dam project in Pakistan in response to India’s recent threat to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty and cut off the water supply to Pakistan.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that the process of concrete filling has officially begun at the Mohmand Dam site, marking a critical construction milestone and a phase of accelerated development for the national flagship project.

The Mohmand Hydropower Project, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has been under construction since September 2019. It is being developed by the state-owned China Energy Engineering Corporation and is considered a flagship initiative by both Pakistan and China. Initially scheduled for completion in 2026, the project’s timeline has now been expedited due to recent regional developments.
The move comes in the wake of India’s announcement to suspend the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. The decision followed a deadly attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir on April 22, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistan-based groups — an allegation Islamabad has denied.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the suspension during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a move seen as a major escalation in diplomatic tensions. The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 with the mediation of the World Bank, had withstood numerous conflicts and was regarded as a cornerstone of water-sharing cooperation between the two countries.
The potential suspension of the treaty raises serious concerns over Pakistan’s water security, as the country relies on the Indus River and its tributaries for nearly 80% of its agricultural needs.
