Lahore is once again witnessing a sharp rise in chicken meat prices. On Thursday, the price of broiler chicken meat increased by Rs. 21 per kilogram, bringing the new rate to Rs. 482 per kilogram.
This latest jump comes just a day after a previous increase. Over the last two days, chicken meat prices have gone up by a total of Rs. 58 per kilogram. The frequent hikes have added pressure on household budgets, especially for lower and middle-income families.
Live broiler chicken prices have also followed the upward trend. The wholesale rate now stands at Rs. 319 per kilogram. At the retail level, consumers are paying around Rs. 333 per kilogram.
Market sources link this price spike to two major factors. First, there have been disruptions in the poultry supply chain. Second, the demand for chicken has recently gone up. Together, these issues have caused a shortage in the market, pushing prices higher.
However, there has been no official explanation from the concerned departments so far. Poultry dealers and shop owners say the rising cost of feed, fuel, and transport is also playing a role in driving up prices.
Consumers across Lahore are feeling the pinch. Many report cutting down on their chicken purchases or switching to alternative protein sources. Retailers are also struggling to keep up with fluctuating prices and customer complaints.
The current surge is part of a larger pattern of price volatility in the poultry sector. Experts warn that unless supply issues are addressed, chicken meat may continue to get more expensive in the coming weeks.
For now, shoppers in Lahore must brace for higher costs as chicken meat becomes less affordable for everyday meals.
The recent spike in chicken meat prices comes amid growing concerns over poultry safety. In a related incident, a gang resuming supply of dead chicken to Lahore hotels was busted again, raising serious health and hygiene issues in the city.
