OpenAI has expanded the role of ChatGPT, introducing a new feature called Instant Checkout. This update allows users to buy products directly through their chats, turning the AI assistant into a shopping tool.
The feature comes as ChatGPT continues to grow in popularity, with over 700 million people using it each month. On average, the platform handles more than 2.5 billion prompts daily. Many of these already involve product recommendations, which made adding direct purchases a logical step.
Instant Checkout was developed in partnership with Stripe, Etsy, and Shopify. The system is powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol, designed to simplify shopping in just a few steps.
Users can search for products, select an item, and press “Buy.” After confirming payment and shipping details, the system calculates taxes and final costs. Payments are processed through Stripe, ensuring reliability and security.
Merchants receive only the information necessary to complete the order. Payment tokens are securely generated, and all transactions are encrypted. OpenAI emphasized that buyers remain in full control, with the ability to cancel at any stage.
At present, Instant Checkout is only available on select platforms and merchants. However, expansion is expected as more companies adopt AI-driven commerce solutions.
There is also speculation that OpenAI may link this feature with ChatGPT Pulse. This could allow the AI to recommend products based on past chats, making shopping even more personalized. Industry experts believe competitors like Google Gemini may soon introduce similar features.
With Instant Checkout, ChatGPT is moving beyond its role as an assistant and stepping into e-commerce. The update highlights how AI is reshaping online shopping by combining convenience, speed, and security.
