CDA to Remove Allergy-Causing Mulberry Trees in Islamabad
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced a major initiative to remove paper mulberry trees, a major trigger for seasonal allergies, and replace them with native plant species.
Objective: Reducing Pollen Allergies
The decision was made in a meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, with input from environmental experts and senior officials. Experts emphasized that paper mulberry pollen is a key contributor to springtime allergies in Islamabad, affecting thousands of residents.

Tree Replacement Plan
- Shakarparian:
- 10,000 paper mulberry trees to be removed.
- 50,000 new trees to be planted.
- Roadsides & Drainage Areas:
- 1,000 trees to be cleared.
- 80,000 indigenous trees to be introduced.
- Other Sectors in Islamabad:
- 10,000 paper mulberry trees to be replaced with 50,000 native plants.
Monitoring & Preservation
Officials assured that the operation would be closely monitored to ensure only the targeted trees are removed while maintaining Islamabad’s green environment.
Although previous efforts have been made to curb pollen-related health risks, this marks the first large-scale initiative to systematically replace allergy-triggering trees with more suitable native species.
