The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is preparing to launch three major road infrastructure projects in Islamabad aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving commuting conditions across key areas of the federal capital. The projects include rehabilitation of the Islamabad Expressway Service Road (East), construction of an underpass at Kashmir Chowk, and development of the long-awaited 11th Avenue corridor.
According to officials, bids from consultancy firms for the Service Road (East) and Kashmir Chowk underpass projects are being received today, while consultancy bids for the 11th Avenue project are scheduled for collection on February 9. Selected consultants will be responsible for preparing project designs and PC-I documentation before financial bids are invited.
Authorities expect consultants to complete planning work within six to eight weeks. Following this phase, CDA plans to initiate the tendering process within approximately two months, allowing construction work to begin soon afterward if approvals proceed on schedule.
The Islamabad Expressway Service Road (East), stretching roughly 9 to 9.5 kilometers from Faizabad to the Gulberg Greens stop, will undergo full rehabilitation. The road currently suffers from potholes and surface damage, creating daily difficulties for commuters travelling between Faizabad and Koral.
Meanwhile, CDA also intends to construct an underpass at Kashmir Chowk, also known as Dhokri Chowk, near Islamabad Club to reduce traffic bottlenecks in the busy area. The 11th Avenue project, which will serve as a major dividing road between sectors G-11 and G-12, is expected to significantly improve connectivity in northern Islamabad.
The projects were reviewed during a meeting at CDA headquarters chaired by Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, where senior officials assessed progress on multiple development initiatives. The chairman directed departments to ensure timely completion and made Environmental Impact Assessments mandatory for all upcoming projects.
Officials also reviewed proposals to widen Atatürk Avenue, including landscaping, decorative lighting, digital information boards, and construction of a dedicated cycling track. Additionally, plans for extending Margalla Avenue from N-5 to M-1 were discussed, involving one loop and two underpasses, with tendering nearing completion.
CDA officials stated that these infrastructure initiatives aim to modernize Islamabad’s road network, reduce congestion, and provide safer and more efficient travel facilities for residents and commuters across the capital.
