A high-level session was held at the CDA Headquarters, chaired by Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman and Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa, focusing on plans to introduce a modern public transport system in the capital.

The Chairman emphasized that enhancing public transport is a top priority for the CDA. The meeting resolved to launch electric tram buses in Islamabad, offering advanced commuting options. He instructed teams to complete the feasibility study to enable deployment of trams on the busiest routes.

The proposed trams will have multiple compartments to increase passenger capacity and ensure accessibility for women and differently-abled individuals.

Officials shared that the feasibility study will cover financial, operational, and business aspects. The current electric bus service has already surpassed 90,000 daily riders due to its punctuality, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendly nature.

Chairman Randhawa stressed the importance of a financially sustainable model, encouraging public-private partnerships. Clear deadlines and operational targets were set for the tram initiative.

He also directed that feeder routes be based on real passenger data to serve high-demand areas. Modern digital screens will be installed at terminals to display ads, safety information, and schedules.

To boost revenue, the CDA plans to implement smart ticketing systems and allow in-bus advertising. Electric buses will also be designated for CDA staff.

It was noted that 140 bus stops are currently being upgraded, while 200 new ones with digital signage will be built to generate non-fare revenue.

Chairman Randhawa concluded that these developments will contribute to a greener, smarter, and more efficient Islamabad, urging public support to make the vision a success.
