Can the India-Pakistan Standoff Over Champions Trophy 2025 Be Resolved

A new proposal is being discussed to resolve the ongoing dispute between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the Indian team’s refusal to play in Pakistan for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. Sources suggest that both cricket boards may have to compromise in order to salvage the tournament and ensure its success.

Under the proposed solution, India would play one of its three group-stage matches in Pakistan, at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. After the match, depending on their qualification, the Indian team would return to either India or the UAE. If India progresses to the semi-finals, they would play their matches in the UAE. However, if they reach the final, they would be required to return to Lahore to play in the final.

In exchange for the UAE-hosted matches, Pakistan would seek an increased share of the tournament’s revenue, compensating for the potential financial losses from India’s reluctance to play in Pakistan. This would represent a significant shift in India’s stance, which has traditionally been firm on not playing in Pakistan.

The proposal is seen as a potential compromise, but it still requires considerable flexibility from both boards. The situation has also been complicated by mounting pressure from broadcasters, who are demanding clarity on the venue and schedule. If a resolution isn’t reached soon, there are concerns that broadcasters might take legal action due to the uncertainty surrounding the tournament.

The 2025 Champions Trophy is set to run from February 19 to March 9, with matches scheduled in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. Lahore will host the final, with Karachi and Rawalpindi staging the semi-finals and group-stage matches. The PCB and BCCI will continue discussions with the hope of finalizing participation and resolving the venue dispute.
