Business tycoon Byram Avari passes away

KARACHI – After a brief illness, Byram Avari, chairman of the Avari Group, passed suddenly in Karachi. He was 81.

Mr. Avari had surgery a few days previously at a private hospital in the city, but his family claims that after his condition worsened, doctors placed him on a ventilator. He was in a critical state when he passed away on Sunday.

The seasoned businessman won two gold medals in the Asian Games sailing competition. His first gold medal came in the 1978 sailing competition with Munir Sadiq, and his second came in the 1982 sailing competition with his wife Goshpi Avari.

He was a well-known figure in the country’s business community and hospitality sector and belonged to the Parsi community. Mr Avari’s funeral rites will be performed on Monday (Jan 23).
