The wedding of a senior bureaucrat’s daughter has sparked outrage, highlighting the divide between the elite and struggling masses amid Pakistan’s economic crisis.
According to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the multi-day celebrations cost an estimated Rs248 million. Authorities noted that neither the bureaucrat nor his daughter declared the lavish spending in tax filings, and no taxes were paid.
The extravaganza featured Rs40 million in venue décor, Rs30 million in catering for 400 guests, and Rs35 million in designer outfits. Jewelry was the costliest element, valued at Rs80 million, while makeup, entertainment, photography, and styling added Rs30 million. Customized invitations, souvenirs, and consulting pushed the bill beyond Rs248 million.
Guests enjoyed fireworks, elaborate light shows, luxury meals, and gift packages, resembling a film production rather than a wedding.
Tax officials pointed out that most payments were made in cash to avoid scrutiny, with the origins of funds still unclear. Adding to public criticism were the bride’s frequent international trips to Canada, the UK, Mexico, and the UAE.
