As the world marks World Environment Day 2024 under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution,” environmental scientists are sounding the alarm over Pakistan’s escalating plastic waste crisis, warning of dire consequences for public health and ecosystems if urgent action is not taken.

Plastic Pollution: A Silent Killer

Dr. Amir Alamgir, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of Karachi, told The Express Tribune that plastic pollution has become one of the most severe environmental threats of our time. “Plastic is cheap and convenient, leading to rampant overuse without considering its deadly consequences,” he said.

Health Hazards of Plastic Exposure

  • Microplastics in Drinking Water: Storing water in plastic bottles—especially when refrigerated—releases toxic microplastics that enter the human body.
  • Organ Damage & Cancer Risk: These particles accumulate in the lungs, digestive system, and bloodstream, potentially causing respiratory diseases, organ damage, and even cancer over time.
  • Toxic Air from Burning Plastic: Open burning of plastic waste releases deadly gases, poisoning the air and worsening respiratory illnesses.

Karachi: Ground Zero of Pakistan’s Plastic Crisis

  • The city generates 14,712 tons of solid waste daily, with only 50% properly disposed—the rest litters streets, drains, and the Arabian Sea.
  • 60% of this waste is plastic, choking marine life and contaminating water sources.
  • “If this continues, Karachi could face irreversible ecological collapse in 15 years,” warned Dr. Alamgir.

Call to Action

Experts urge strict bans on single-use plastics, better waste management policies, and public awareness campaigns to curb pollution before it’s too late.
