At 83, legendary singer and actress Barbra Streisand is celebrating the happiness her family brings—and it’s even inspired her latest album, The Secret of Life: Partners, Volume Two, her first in seven years.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Streisand shared a touching moment with her grandchildren, recalling how a spontaneous photo session behind a screen door captured the essence of family love. “The feeling whenever they’re here is just joyous. It’s very, very special,” she said.

Streisand, whose stepson Josh Brolin has four children and whose stepdaughter has a three-year-old, reflected on the importance of family, even naming her album after the idea that “the secret of life” includes cherished loved ones.

The album features collaborations with music icons like Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, and Tim McGraw. However, Streisand admitted she initially doubted her voice after recording her memoir audiobook left her hoarse. “I hadn’t sung in a long time, so I didn’t know if I had a voice left,” she said. “But as long as I can sing, I love the privacy of recording—just me, the mic, and the music.”

With a career spanning seven decades—and as the first artist to achieve EGOT status (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony)—Streisand also shared wisdom for her younger self: “Believe in yourself, your choices, and what you feel. I did it instinctively.”

Her new album not only marks a musical return but also a heartfelt tribute to the love that fuels her life.
