Due to a fractured index finger, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was forced to sit out the final group match against Australia in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023. Shakib sustained the finger injury while batting in the same tournament, a game in which Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews became the first player in international cricket history to be timed out after an appeal by Shakib, which he refused to withdraw.

According to the team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan, Shakib initially got struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with support from taping and painkillers. After the game, an emergency X-ray in Delhi confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint, and the estimated recovery time is three to four weeks. Shakib was set to depart for Bangladesh on the same day to begin his rehabilitation.

Despite his injury, Shakib played an outstanding innings, scoring 82 runs off 65 deliveries, which included 12 boundaries and two sixes. Bangladesh ultimately won the match against Australia by three wickets, thereby eliminating Sri Lanka from the ICC World Cup 2023. Shakib Al Hasan was named the man of the match for his exceptional all-around performance.

While Bangladesh has won only two out of eight games in the ICC World Cup 2023 and is already out of contention for the final four, they currently occupy the seventh position in the ten-team points table. Their last match is of significant importance as it could impact their chances of qualifying for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.
