Awami League joint secretary general, Bahauddin Nasim, officially confirmed that Shakib obtained nomination forms on Saturday to run in the 2024 elections. The cricket sensation is eyeing representation in the Magura-1 constituency, his hometown district, with the elections scheduled for January 7.
Expressing a warm welcome, Bahauddin Nasim acknowledged Shakib’s celebrity status and immense popularity, especially among the youth of the country. Currently recovering from a finger injury sustained in the World Cup match against Sri Lanka on November 6, Shakib remains uncertain about his return to the field.

It’s noteworthy that Shakib Al Hasan is following a trend in Bangladesh cricket, where players transitioning into politics is not uncommon. Former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza, for example, entered politics and became a Member of Parliament in the previous elections, representing Narail. Mashrafe has once again been nominated this year, showcasing his continued involvement in community activities in his hometown. In contrast, Shakib has not been actively engaged in public life beyond cricket.
BCB President Nazmul Hassan, an MP since 2009, secured another nomination from his Kishoreganj constituency. BCB Director Shafiul Alam Chowdhury also received a nomination for the Moulvibazar seat. Despite efforts, former Bangladesh captain Naimur Rahman, an incumbent MP, was unsuccessful in securing the Manikganj seat for the upcoming elections.
Regarding cricket, Shakib, who announced his decision to step down as the ODI captain before the World Cup, still holds the position of T20I leader.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
