The Balochistan government has announced the launch of a People’s Train Service connecting Quetta and Kuchlak. The provincial government plans to release Rs. 1.4 billion for the project in the coming days.
Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti made the announcement during a meeting with Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi at the Chief Minister Secretariat. The meeting focused on reviving railway projects in Balochistan through joint efforts between the provincial government and Pakistan Railways.
Officials said both sides agreed in principle to start joint development projects, with the People’s Train Service as a flagship initiative. Federal Minister Abbasi welcomed the project, calling it the first time a province has taken such an initiative under Pakistan’s devolution framework.
Abbasi described the service as a sign of cooperation between the federation and provincial governments. While other provinces have expressed interest in local railway services, Balochistan is taking the lead, he said.
The People’s Train Service will be operated jointly by Pakistan Railways and the provincial government. Chief Minister Bugti added that the Balochistan government will fund new railway stations and upgrade existing infrastructure to support the service.
He noted that if the Quetta-Kuchlak service is successful, the government plans to extend it to Mastung, Pishin, and other parts of the province. The initiative aims to improve public transport, enhance regional connectivity, and support economic development in Balochistan.
Officials emphasized that the project reflects a long-term commitment to modernizing railway infrastructure. The People’s Train Service is expected to provide safe, reliable, and affordable transport for daily commuters and travelers in the region.
